             The genre of this text is an article from the Drug Awareness Information Newsletter. The writer is Gabriel G. Naha, a professor of anesthesiology. The intended audience is anyone really who wishes to know the problems of marijuana being legalized. The article's first paragraph uses a personal approach to the audience by stating, "the prohibition of their use is based on the general philosophy of protecting man, especially adolescent man, from harming himself and society." This sentence is aimed at the problems that adolescent's face when they use the drug and the audience would most likely realize these problems and somehow they may become emotionally involved or seem more interested to keep reading the article. Gabriel G. Naha seems to aim the text around the fact that marijuana is a stupefying drug and has stated that "in most instances it is futile to try to reason with a mentally ill person." He makes the marijuana users seem like they are "mentally ill". It supports his argument because people shouldn't be "mentally ill" when something is illegal, let alone when/if it is legalized. He bases his article on lawyers and judges and what he believes they should do in reaction to this concept. He uses the names of lawyers and dates to back up what he has written and his language is scientific. It doesn't really keep the audience entertained; therefore less may be enticed to read it. Although again in the finishing paragraph he uses another emotional approach by asking, "How to protect those who are too young to make an informed decision." It is used to tie in with the first paragraph and makes the article end sympathetically to make the audience think about the problems marijuana would/could cause if it was legalized. .
