Many people joined new congregational churches that better fitted their own beliefs. .
             The southern colonies economy was based in slaves and plantations. The southern colonies used indentured servant, later replaced by slaves to harvest large fields of land: mainly tobacco. Profit was great, considering the payment of the slaves compared to how toiling there work. The southern colonies sold their products to their mother country for less then what they were capable of getting if sold to another country. Unlike the south the New England colonies set out to make as big a profit as possible. New England sold their products and goods all throughout the seas, even to their mother country's European rivals. The south's population grew and food became scarce. Growing so much tobacco had to change. Southerners cut a small amount of tobacco that was grown and in place planted sustenance plants. New England had a different problem. New England's exportation of so many goods became a problem when England was trying to subdue the French West Indies. While the British were trying to subdue this area the colonials were still exporting foodstuff and supplies to The French West Indies, therefore keeping people live and armed. England stopped all exports from New England. New England was able to export goods once the West Indies was subdued. New England could keep its economy bumming without the help of England. New England felt even more a sense of independence.
             In the eighteenth century eight colonies had royal governors, three were under proprietors, and two had self-governing charters. Practically every colony utilized a two house legislative body. The council was normally appointed by the crown in the royal colonies and by the proprietors in the proprietary colonies. In the two self-governing colonies the voters chose the council. But throughout the colonials lives they were periodically, salutarily neglected.
