Constantine's Control

Constantine used religion and power to control his people. He enforced his views by making the people believe that his power was tied to religion, therefore the people needed to follow his rule.
In the beginning, Constantine's empire was divided in a complex way; he was not held as a high ruler until he had defeated the other groups that he was battling. In his early years, there was a lot of war and battle; he wanted to form a united Roman Empire. Constantine supported Christianity and helped it gain recognition. He held ceremonies they were patriotic and religious. It was to help better the empire as well as the religious beliefs. One night Constantine claimed that a spirit came to visit him and commanded him to make a likeness of that sign which he had seen in the heavens, and to use it as a safeguard in all engagements with his enemies. This suggests that the military and religious elements were tied into each other.
Constantine had prohibited all priests and preachers of other religions in the area. He wanted the people to have one religion that would bind the people into one community to strengthen his empire. Constantine needed some more powerful aid than his military forces could afford him, on account of the wicked and magical enchantments which were so diligently practiced by the tyrant, he sought Divine assistance. He became so overwhelming that people began to dislike his rule.
In Constantine's Empire he forced the practice and beliefs of Christianity upon his people. He tied religion to power, almost like a mandate. This caused many people to begin to believe and accept his rule as being just.
