Machiavelli

He further contends that "it is impossible for one nation to seize by force the wealth or trade of another war even when victorious can no longer achieve those aims for which people strive" (232). He supports his argument with the idea that the "economically civilized world is founded on credit and commercial contract" (232) and if another country tried to claim the wealth of the nation it would collapse. Another supporting argument that Angell uses is the idea that nations have become so dependent on one another that the trade and industry are intangible. Could these arguments be applied to the current situation with the United States and Iraq? The wealth of the Iraqi nation seen through a Westerners eyes isn't based on credit, but on oil and we are trying to seize it. Although we aren't dependent on Iraq for bartering currently, but once we overthrow their government and create a democratic country, then we will export their oil. The most profound idea that Angell states is the idea that no longer can we enforce a nations "moral ideals", because the nations themselves have multiple sets of "moral ideas" with in their own borders. Overall I think that the presentation of the Angell's arguments could have been expanded on. It seems that the synopsis, just cuts off at the end not explaining the solution to the arguments that Angell presents. .
Geoffrey Blainey's article Paradise is a Bazaar examines the Manchester creed "Paradise is an international bazaar" (Blainey 234). The followers of this creed believed that nations grew richer through commerce rather than conquest and that peace lay in the "institution and inventions which promoted the exchange of ideas and commodities" (234). Blainey argues that the Manchester creed minimized the importance of threats and didn't realize the fact that "intellectual and commercial liberty were most assured in the United States and Britain" (240).
