Enemies Of War


            
             "Enemies of War" is a movie that covers the case of El Salvador. This Latin-American country was has been struck with poverty throughout its history. During the 1980s it endured on a brutal civil war that was ignored in the global arena. Women and children died during this atrocious period of history in which the army ended up killing more than 75,000 civilians in the countryside of El Salvador. This movie is one that shocked the world. It is a movie that presents the immense suffering through which civilians had to go through in El Salvador in order to live in a state of peace. .
             . The film examines the horrendous murders of six Jesuit priests and the subsequent political and social ramifications as seen through the eyes of a Salvadoran family, a United States congressman, an ex-ambassador and an American priest. A civilian named Margarita Acosta de Alas explains how her husband Rigoberto fought with the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) rebels. Her life was full of drama during that period and was always on the run trying to save their life. It shows how this war completely destroyed the family nucleus by separating them Margarita gives testimony of the atrocitites committed by the army when they used bombs and arms against children and women. .
             One of the most important parts of the documentary is United States Congressman Joe Moakley. He sounds very angry the brutal murders of the Jesuits. He responding to an international outcry and led a task force to investigate the deaths. His investigation began an international process that actually led to the end of the war and the beginning of a profound change for El Salvador. He did this by challenging his own government and the policies that it had been taking in order to put an end to communism in Latin America. .
             This movie is an excellent piece of history which shows in what way ordinary citizens can make a significant change on the reality of their own people in their own time.
