This seems like a lot of people, but female genital mutilation is performed in twenty-eight African countries, parts of the Middle East, Far East, and African Immigrants in Europe (Wellard paragraph 15). Those numbers, if calculated, come out to be about six thousand women a day. Perhaps these numbers are so high because the women in some of these countries aren't as educated as they should be. In Egypt, the female literacy rate is only thirty-four percent, in Kenya fifty-nine percent, in Nigeria forty percent, in Somalia only nine percent, and in Sudan twelve percent (Weir paragraph 8). These are absolutely ridiculous numbers. Any country that has such a terrible literacy rate has no right to perform surgery on its own. They don't know what may happen, or if something does happen, they don't know how to fix it.
"Female genital mutilation is most often performed between the ages of four and ten years, although in some communities it may be practiced on infants or postponed until just before marriage (Joel E. Frader paragraph 5)." There are physical complications that accompany this process however, some being chronic and others acute. Some of the risks include hemorrhaging, blood loss, local infection, trauma, and a long list of other problems. There aren't just physical problems that go along with female genital mutilation, but some problems are psychological as well. Since little research has been done in the countries where it is practiced, the people don't really know what they"re dealing with. If wealthier countries, such as the United States and Russia would form a coalition, and help educate the countries and people that practice female genital mutilation, it could continue, but would be a much safer practice. .
If there is going to be a change made, it would require sensitivity to the background of the patients, and her parents. A change would also require appreciation of the significance of the custom in the tradition.
