Great Depression


Congress passed many acts to help programs that were in shambles including aid for businesses, farmers and work projects to get Americans back to work. When Roosevelt and his advisories first took office they went right to work, as in the first Hundred Days a bewildering number of bills were passed through in hopes of stimulating the economy.
             The second New deal in 1935 was steered towards social reform and Justice. Programs such as the Works Progress Administration and Social Security were established. The second deal was responding in part to the discontent of the lower middle class, but also to the threat of various utopian schemes. The Third New Deal Was A wrap up of the acts that completed the New Deal reform Legislation. Among bills passed were bills that provided for a minimum wage and for housing reforms.
             The Supreme Court was always involved in Roosevelt plan to stimulate the economy because the court invalidated many measures of the new deal, like the NIRA and AAA. Roosevelt's anger at the nine old men, planned to replace six of the judges by passing a law that require judges to be younger than 70. This plan cried outr for a modernization of the court system at all levels. Needles to say it never worked, but the New Deals all had a part in a recovering economy.
             3. World War II.
             In May of 1935 Italy invaded Ethiopia, and after quick work, Mussolini joined forces with Germany to form the Rome - Berlin Axis. On August 30, 1939 Germany led by Hitler's nazi army attacked Poland, and by treaty Britain and France came to Poland's defense. That marked the beginning of the second Great War.
             The major players in World War II were Germany, Italy, and Austria-Hungary which formed the Axis. Later Japan played an important role to the Axis. On the Allied side Britain, France, and USSR made up the good guys. On Dec. 7, 1941 the Japanese would attack Pearl Harbor, which drew us into war by declaring war on Japan.
