GROUP EXPERIENCES

I immediately began thoroughly examining the criteria for the paper. I briefly reviewed each theory that needed to be related to the topic of maintaining a positive self-esteem. I evaluated my knowledge of each and decided which ones I thought I could best write on. .
According to studies performed (Biek, Wood, & Chaiken, 1996; Edwards & Smith, 1996; Lord, Ross, & Lepper, 1979; Vailone, Ross, & Lepper, 1985) "human beings do not process information in an unbiased manner. Rather, we distort it in a way that fits our preconceived notions" (Akert, Aronson & Wilson, 2002, Pg 177). Keeping this in mind, I have an underlying schema that distorted my decision making process, through the entire paper. "If you want something done right, you must do it yourself". This schema makes it difficult for me to rely on others to do work in a competent manner, especially when it has a direct affect on myself. The article "Evolution, Selfishness, and Cooperation" stated that "cooperation can create a synergy which strongly extends the set of reachable goals". With the combining of these two cognition, I took it upon myself to make a task oriented outline for our team. I included what I wanted to write on, how long I thought the introduction, conclusion and each theory should be and stated a proposed deadline for the references. I thought by basically assigning a minimum amount of words for each theory, as well each team member selecting the theories they choose to write on, I would produce a sense of irrevocability (Akert et al., 2002). Thus attempting to create a sense of responsibility within them for their part of the paper. This was a strategy of "conditional altruism", I put forth my extra effort with the expectations of it benefitting the whole group (Evolution, Selfishness, and Cooperation). My goal was for us to work together effectively as a team and receive an A. I might note, I thought I had control of the destiny of this goal.
