African American Experience

This lab had to do with stereotypes. Each member of the group was to bring in an artifact that represented them. With the rest of the group unaware as to what the artifact was, we were supposed to guess who each artifact belonged to. I was very interested in this lab beforehand. I thought it would teach me a lot about stereotyping and generalizing and at the same time be fun. The lab might have worked if people in my group had cared.
The lab began with everyone putting artifacts into the bag. The bag ended up being filled with pencils, ID's, keys, pieces of candy, and other useless and pointless artifacts. This was upsetting. Only three people in my group had enough courtesy to bring in a real piece of themselves. .
I was very open minded to this class and wanted to learn more about stereotypes and the bad ones I may have about groups of people. This lab may have helped to continue my stereotypes. Of the nine people in my group, three brought in a worthy artifact, and the other six grabbed from their pockets to find something at the last minute.
Only a few seemed to care, or even to try to do the lab correctly. This is the first class I have taken at the Metro Campus and the students in this class are nothing like I have ever seen at other campuses. From one lab, which ironically was supposed to help me learn about stereotypes and generalizations, helped me to maintain or start them. .
An excellent attempt at a lab, in the end did not help me. Hoping that I could learn from this experience and enjoy myself was dampened with my group member's inability and carelessness to take the lab seriously.
