Glory Movie Response

Glory, when I hear and think about this word, many thoughts come to my mind. I think of the 54th regiment and the feeling of pride and commitment each individual showed. July 17,1862 was a very important day in history; this was that day that allowed African Americans to join the union army. More than 200,000 African Americans fought for the union. And sadly 38,000 of these men died. The civil war was a big part of history and the men who fought will always be remembered as heroes. To do this day, we remember all these men who gave up their lives and the dedication they showed.
African Americans joined the northern army for a variety of reasons. The first reason is that, if they fought African American soldiers would be freed. If I were a slave, I would jump at this opportunity. Even though there was a chance of me dying, it still would be worth it. The feeling of pride and the chance to be free would make me want to become a solider. The next reason was that they were paid, and they received food and clothing. Even though they received less those white soldiers, this was soon changed. Another reason many joined was to prove to others that they were capable. Many people discriminated black people, and fighting this war showed true bravery and determination.
During the civil war, Africans faced many different kinds of discrimination and racism. White Americans thought that blacks could not be disciplined or trained to be good soldiers. Many believed that Africans would run when fired upon or attacked. Not only that, but Africans received lower pay than white soldiers. I enjoyed the part in the movie when the soldiers ripped their checks, because they felt it was unfair. This was a dangerous move, but it resulted in a happy outcome. I admire the courage the soldiers showed to prove that it wasn't fair. However, on June 15, 1864 congress passed a law requiring equal pay. They also received no respect and had poor medical care and weapons.
