The news of their wedding and marriage attracted nationwide publicity. (Source 4, 48-49) Jackie had to adapt herself to her new role as wife to one of the most energetic political figures in the world. (Source 1, 9-10) She appeared in public very rarely, but when she did make an appearance she had everyone's attention (Source 2, 15-16) Shortly after they were married Jackie had a miscarriage and a still birth of their daughter. Finally their daughter Caroline Bouvier was born in 1957. Later between the election and Inauguration Day of 1960, their son John Jr. was born. A third child, Patrick Bouvier who was born prematurely on August 7, 1963, died 2 days later. (Source 5, 20-23).
Jackie brought beauty, intelligence, and cultivated taste in the role of first lady as she shared her interest in art. (Source 7, 1-2) She devoted time and study to making the White House a museum of American History and decorative arts as well as a family residence of elegance and charm. (Source 7,15) She stated that her major role in the White House was to, "take care of the president and her children, I don't think whatever else you do well matters very much." (Source 5, 12) She was a woman that possessed many talents. In 1951 she won a writing contest with Vogue magazine and won a trip to France. Vogue reprinted it in 1961 to inspire a new generation. (Source 2, 7-8) She also wrote a book called, The White House to help raise funds for the restoration of the White House. The book sold for only one dollar and generated over two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in the first 3 months! She sold the rights to a documentary called, "A Tour of the White House" and it was broadcast on February 14, 1962. (Source 4, 10-11) .
On November 22, 1963 Jackie and the President attended a Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce reception, wearing all pink. In Dallas later on that afternoon, while riding in an open-top-limo JFK was assassinated by gunshots allegedly fired by Lee Harvey Oswald from a 6th floor window of the Texas schoolbook depository building.
