The castle was built on a hill rather than level ground and I believe this was for defensive purposes. This could be a man made hill and from my historic knowledge I know that a man made hill is a sign that a Motte and Bailey castle could have been present many years earlier. The castle is built by the River Wye and the Welsh border, this was to protect the border and the river, so I can now dictate that this castle was created in the period between 1066 and 1100 AD, because in that period castles were built on particular sites, i.e. on borders and this explains why Goodrich castle is built near the border of Wales. The castle is also built by a village, which could support the fact that it was used as a defensive stronghold, also it supports the fact that this castle was once used a Motte and Bailey castle because this village could have been the Bailey and people used the Bailey for protection, as it was situated in near proximity to the castle.
