Les Miserables


Fantine is very ill and near death, her last wish is to see Cosette. He goes to Arras and tells them he is Jean and returns back to Fantine. Fantine dies and Jean promises to look after Cosette. .
             Cosette is treated as a servant by the Thenardiers. She is forced to do difficult chores and is pushed around. When she is forced to go to the woods to get the horses water. Jean helps her carry the heavy bucket and protects her. He pays the Thenardiers 1500 francs for Cosette. Jean and Cosette live a house and they become attached to one an other. The landlady betrays Jean and he leaves the house when her is being watched. Jean runs away from the watcher and is being chased. He manages to lose them. Jean recognizes the man as Javert. Jean and Cosette move in with a man Jean helped long ago.
             Jean and Cosette sneak into a convent. When a nun dies they sneak out and re-enters the convent as Fauchelevant's brother. Cosette is going to be educated at the convent. The two live there happily for many years and Cosette grows to be a teenager. .
             Gillenormand is a member of the old Bourgeois. He had two wives and from them he had two daughters. His grandson Marius lives with him. Marius' father fought against Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo and is thought of as a disgrace. After Marius father dies, Marius learns of his father. He realizes hem was a good man and visits his grave in secret. He leaves his grandfathers house. He soon becomes a lawyer and gets a small room in the Gorbeau house. Marius becomes very handsome but is not interested in the women who like him. He soon falls in love with Cosette. Jean feels that he has caught Marius in the act of trying to flirt with Cosette. Soon Valjean and Cosette move away, and leave no forwarding address. Marius walks the streets hoping to find his lost love. Jean is in trouble with the Thenardier and Marius calls the police to help the father of the one he loves. Jean is asked to get 200,000 francs but he doesn't.
