Manet, Edouard


This painting was extremely controversial in Manet's time because the subject of the painting includes a nude woman picnicking with two clothed men. .
             Many political events occurred during Manet's lifetime which appeared in his works. The most significant one being the Franco-Prussian war that left Paris crushed. Manet began painting fewer scenes about daily life and more about battle and war. His works include Execution of Mazimilian, Civil War and The Barricade. Life in Paris was very dangerous, Manet had protected his family so he sent them south and joined the National Guard. .
             In 1874, a group of Impressionist artist held their first exhibition at Nadar's Studio. Because Manet did not want to be classified as one type of artist, he refused to participate in this exhibit. Even thought Manet never showed his work in Impressionists shows, he did not abandon the other Impressionist artists. .
             In 1883 Manet died of the disease, locomotor ataxia, which attacks and destroys the central nervous system and causes paralysis. This disease was the result by an untreated case of syphilis that Manet contracted early in his life. Because some cases can cause people to have blurred vision, Manet found it easier on himself and his eyes to use pastels instead of paint. In addition to locomotor ataxia, Manet contracted gangrene and had to have his left foot amputated over a week before he died.
             Edouard Manet has been called the father of Impressionism. His style and inspiration brought the Impressionist movement about. But even though he was pressured from Claude Monet and Edgar Degas, he would not display his work with the Impressionists during their group shows. Manet did not want to be classified into any group or name. Manet only wanted to hang his pictures in the Salon. He believed it was the only place for him to become famous. .
             Manet was frequently confused with the painter Monet. This irritated Manet because he thought their styles were completely different.
