             3. FINANCIAL ANALYSIS.
             3.1 - Profitability Analysis.
             Firstly we will compare Westpac's performance to its own previous results, profit has increased steadily from $1272 million dollars in 1998 to $2192 million dollars at the end of the financial year 2002, an average of 18.08% each year. Secondly, we will compare Westpac's performance against some of the other major banks.

             If we look at the operating profit after tax and the underlying performance of Australia's five major banks, Westpac currently ranks 4th in terms of profit size and underlying performance. Westpac is returning a higher profit for each operating year. Refer to Fig 3.1.
             Figure 3.1 shows that all banks have performed strongly, but Westpac is a consistent performer, while CBA and NAB have been less consistent with their profits. Generally the top 5 banks have seen an increase on return on equity of 18.9% (normalised.) Westpac achieved 21.7 % (refer to Fig. 3.2), the industry benchmark is 20%. (www.kpmg.com).

             We will compare net profit, operating income and net operating costs of Westpac (figure 3.3) and one of its competitors, the CBA (figure 3.4), CBA has been selected as it currently has the greatest market share over the 5 major Banks and underlying performance has a similar trend to Westpac over a 5-year period. This will help us compare the percentage change of these profitability measures year on year within Westpac and then against one of its industry competitors.

             Figure 3.3 shows us that Westpac achieved higher level of profitability from its income, despite almost a 10% increase in operating costs over the previous year(s).
