Cocaine-related deaths are often a result of cardiac arrest or seizures followed by respiratory arrest.
Starting in 1986, Darryl Strawberry began to have problems with his wife and career. She accused him of breaking her nose after a game in October of 86, and then filed for a legal separation in 87. Then, on January 26th, of 1990, Darryl was arrested for alleged assault with a deadly weapon during an argument with his wife. He is alleged to have hit her in the face with an open hand and also to have threatened her with a .25-caliber semiautomatic handgun. He was then released on $12,000 bail. In February later that year, Darryl entered Smither's Center for alcohol rehabilitation. Three years later, Strawberry was arrested for allegedly striking Charisse Simons, the 26-year-old woman he lived with. On September 21st, no charges were filed by Simons against Strawberry for allegedly hitting her. Then on the 23rd, Darryl contemplated suicide for a day because of the accumulated problems. April 3rd of 94, He failed to show up for the Dodger's final exhibition game against California at Anaheim Stadium and was not located until that night. The next day, the Dodgers announced that Darryl Strawberry had a substance abuse problem, and was then placed on the disabled list. He entered the Betty Ford Center on the 8th for treatment of his substance abuse. He finished is stay at the Betty Ford Center 28 days later. Strawberry and his agent ended the year with accusations of tax invasion, but pleaded guilty in December. Then in February, the MLB suspended Strawberry for 60 days after he tested positive for cocaine. The Giants then released him. On April 24th of 95, Strawberry was ordered to pay $350,000 back in taxes and was sentenced to a 6 month home confinement. Though the permit allowed him to leave home for practice and games, and he also allowed to travel to road games with the baseball team.
