Mayas

The civilization I chose to write about was the Mayas. The five themes of geography (Location, place, interaction, movement and region) are all related to the Mayas. The first theme of geography is location. Location is the exact and relative location of a place. Exact location is the location described in lines of latitude and longitude. Relative location is what surrounds the location such as a country or state. The second theme of geography is place. Place is the physical and human features of a place. The third theme of geography is interaction. Interaction is how people have adapted to and changed their natural environment to live. The fourth theme of geography is movement. Movement involves the movement of people, goods and ideas. For example: An airport is an example of movement. The fifth theme of geography is region. Region is an area of the world that has similar unifying characteristics. They may be physical or cultural characteristics.
The five themes of geography relates to the Mayan civilization because the relative location is south of North America and West of the Aztec empire. The exact location of Tikal (A Mayan city) is 17 degrees north and 90 degrees west. The picture on the top right hand corner is a map of the whole Mayan civilization. The theme place, relates to the Mayan civilization because the physical features of the Mayan land are bodies of water, which are the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Since there are bodies of water, Mayans went fishing for food. The picture on the bottom right hand corner is an example of a Mayan house. Mayan homes had mud walls and thatched roofs. They were also held up with poles. Another way the theme place relates to the Mayan civilization is the human features. Examples of human features are the Mayan gods, agricultural gods and Mayan hieroglyphics. On the bottom left hand corner, there is a picture of a Mayan hieroglyphic.
