Rip Van Winkle


            Rip Van Winkle and The Cask of Amontillado are two stories written during the period of romanticism. The period of romanticism is a time, in which Americans created a new writing technique different from the Europeans. Rip Van Winkle and The Cask of Amontillado contain many similarities, yet have many differences. .
             Rip Van Winkle and The Cask of Amontillado show the main character facing a personal dilemma. Rip Van Winkle's dilemma was dealing with his problems at home. He never felt like doing any of the chores or responsibilities a father of the family must do. Instead, Rip Van Winkle went out into the wilderness and did what he wanted to do. In The Cask of Amontillado, Montresor's dilemma was figuring out a way to commit revenge without letting other people know. Montresor used his sneaker tactics in order to lure his victim where Montresor wanted him. When the time came, Montresor killed his victim letting his victim know who had done the deed. .
             Rip Van Winkle and The Cask of Amontillado have different writing styles from one another. Rip Van Winkle's writing method is about nature. Rip Van Winkle loved the wilderness and spent most of his time there. The scenes that take place in nature have more in common with the American Literature. American Literature is about man's animal instinct inside and the love for nature. The writing style of American Literature is what separated it from Europe. The Cask of Amontillado on the other hand, was a dark and gothic writing style. The story brought out the evil inside of the characters. Anger, torment, and revenge are what stormed within Montresor's body. .
             Rip Van Winkle and The Cask of Amontillado have many similarities and difference between them. The two stories were similar because of the personal dilemma each story had. Yet they were different, because the two stories had different writing styles. Both in conclusion were the examples of American Literature written during the period of romanticism.
