The education system in this country has been seriously whacked for many years. One can not deny the lack of organization coming from our schools! With the high rate of failures and drop outs, not to mention the ever-growing population of unemployed (if people only held more skills and brains, they wouldn't have a problem finding unique ways of making money, such as starting a business!), who or what is to bear the blame for this absurdity? I have no doubt that any intelligent being who thoroughly reviews our public school system can find a variety of areas needing major improvements, and although I would love to touch on many of these, I only have room for one: uniforms.
Taking a glance from afar at other country's more successful school systems, one key element tends to stand out over the rest: the degree of conformity within school attire. I know what you"re probably thinking: "Conformity! *GASP* the pinnacle of communism!" Well, maybe you ought to rethink that thought and check out some hard evidence, such as test scores. Korea, Japan, and China all hold the top spots as countries simply pro at doing math; America barely even makes the list! What does this have to do with uniforms? The key is in concentration! .
I"ll admit, like every other middle and high school student, I too suffered from attention deficit disorder. Being put in a hormonally driven prison, with other's constantly coaxing you to mime them, less be cast into the pit of unpopularity, one naturally tends to occupy the mind more about clothes, style, and image rather than academics. I too spent every waking moment contemplating how I could be cool and stylish like Joe over there with his bad-ass hair-do, rarely lifting a brain-cell for math. Now look at me, I"m in college and I"m as dumb as a rock! .
Now, let's look at the situation in Japan for example, where uniforms yet remain a dominant form of student sub-culture.
