This organization launched a campaign for complete equality and justice for African Americans, with an emphasis on political rights.
These two leaders, on the other hand, had many similarities as well. Even though their methods and views were almost totally different they were both striving toward the same goal, the racial equality of African Americans and whites in this country. They both wanted to further educate the African American community whether it be economical or political. They wanted to help achieve what the African American race had been looking for throughout history, total freedom in every sense of the word; the right to vote, desegregated restaurants and public facilities, and equal opportunities with whites.
They had different approaches on getting their message across to their audiences. Washington had a more peaceful approach. This is understood in the beginning of his speech, "In the season of disturbances and excitement, if others yield to the temptation of losing control of their judgment and give way to passion and prejudice, let us teach the world that we have learned the great lesson of calmness and self-control; that we are determined to be governed by reason rather than by feeling."(20) In this quote he speaks of the temptation of losing control, and how they should teach a lesson of calmness and self-control, in this he is trying to tell his followers not to give into this temptation of which most of them had had thoughts of due to the recent violent events of the time. This also supports the idea that Washington had a more peaceful method for his people to overcome the problems that faced them. He said that the African American people as stated earlier should accept discrimination for the time being as they worked towards their goal but not lose sight of it in the process. .
Another quote that was important from Washington's speech was "Be careful not to assist in lighting a fire which you will have no ability to put out.
