Richard Rodriguez


But for many years he could not pronounce it. A powerful guilt blocked his spoken words. But the effort to bring him into the linguistic mainstream had far-reaching consequences. Rodriguez went on to earn degrees in English at Stanford and philosophy at Columbia. He then pursued a doctorate in English Renaissance literature at Berkley and spent a year in London on a Fulbright Scholarship.
             Though Rodriguez had his sight set on a career in academia, he abruptly went to his own way in 1976. Supporting himself by freelance writing and various temporary jobs, he spent the next five years coming to terms with how education had altered his life. He has published numerous articles in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The American Scholar, Time, Mother Jones, and The New Republic, as well as other publications. Most recently Richard received a 1997 George Foster Peabody Award for his News Hour essays on American life. Richards awards included the Frank medal from the national Endorsement For The Humanities and The International Journalism Award from the World Affairs Council of California. Mr. Rodriguez is currently living in San Francisco working on new material to publish.

             There, are great books that Rodriguez has written such as Hunger of Memory his first book published in 1982. It is about his journey from being "socially disadvantage child" to a fully assimilated American, from the Spanish speaking world of his family to the wider, public life promised him by English. His form of writing is out spoken. It revolves around him and his culture his roots his life of being a Chicano. He got his inspiration from the painful alienation from this past, his parents, and his culture. In this book he offers him self as an example of the long labor of change about his loneliness, but also his triumph.
             In his other book, Days of Obligation: An Argument with My Mexican Father publish in 1992, Rodriguez explores the dilemmas of ethnicity and cultural identity.
