SIDS

Though more babies of smokers die from SIDS than non-smokers. Infants at higher risk of SIDS include: premature infants, mothers who smoked or took illegal drugs during pregnancy, infants whose parents smoked around them after birth, infants who are not breastfed, infants of mothers with little or no prenatal care and those from poor socioeconomic environment (Sears 19). Other risk factors include multiple births, prematurely born infants, siblings of SIDS victims, infants with central hypertension, infants of mothers who are narcotic addicts or who smoke during pregnancy, young maternal age, short intervals between pregnancies and late prenatal care (SIDS). While SIDS shows an increase in these factors the importance of each factor is not well defined or understood. The incidence is 2 out of 1,000 live births or about 7,000 infants annually (SIDS). .
In light of new research, SIDS should no longer be considered a mysterious cloud that hangs over cribs and causes babies to breathe there last breath (Sears 48). Armed with new understanding information parents can at least take partial control of their parenting practice to reduce worry and reduce risks. You can make a difference and lower your baby's chances of dying of SIDS whether your baby is at risk or not. There are seven risk lowering steps: 1) Give your baby a healthy womb environment 2) Do not allow smoke around your baby prenatal or postnatal 3) Put your baby to sleep on his back or side not on his stomach,(Kotulak) 4) Breastfeed your baby 5) Give your baby a safe sleeping environment 6) Avoid overheating your baby during sleep 7) Practice the "high touch" style of attachment parenting (Sears 48). Attachment Parenting is a way of caring that helps the mother and infant get connected. Gastroesophageal reflux (GER), the regurgitation of stomach acids into the esophagus, has recently been implicated as a cause of SIDS (Sears 81).
