Silas Marner

In the novel Silas Marner, written by George Elliot, I was chosen to write about irony. This was good because many ironic situations occurred in this novel. In the following paragraphs, I will explain to you how I believe faith in people caused the most ironic situations. I will provide many examples and details that support them.
When you put your faith in someone it should be someone you trust and not to be taken lightly. In the novel, ironically, people always seem to be putting faith in someone they can't trust. In the paragraphs that follow I will show many examples of how this irony is displayed.
For example, in the beginning of the story Silas puts his faith in his best friend William. William lets Silas down and lies about the knife. He says that Silas had the knife and that he believes Silas committed the robbery when in actuality William really did. .
Godfrey loans his brother money and has faith that he will pay him back, but he doesn't. Since Dunstan, his brother, lets him down he must find another way to repay the money. Godfrey asks Dunstan to sell his horse because he is left no choice. In the end Dunstan ironically kills the horse on its last run leaving Godfrey to find money for himself.
When Silas" money is stolen he informs the villagers. Silas has no faith in the villagers and believes they look upon him as a person of low stature. However the villagers pull together to try to help Silas find the person who robbed his gold.
A young girl named Eppie is exposed to danger because her mother, addicted to opium, leaves her in the freezing temperatures. During this time her mother passes away. This proves that Eppie could not put her faith in her mother to protect her.
In conclusion I"d like to say that Silas Marner poses great irony. I felt that faith in people brought out the most ironic situations. In this novel characters put their faith in the wrong people and I hope I showed you this throughout my paper.
