The Gender-Factor In The Accounting Profession

Because of this male-designed framework, women have different experiences in college than that of a male student (Nelson 2002). .
Women have reported feeling silenced and alienated in class, and having less self-confidence than their male counterparts. Reports show that in class discussions, males are more active than women are. Teachers are reported as giving more attention and time to male students in the classroom. Gender stereotypes are a component of the college classroom environment and the teachers and students" socialization (Nelson 2002).
Though many college women have increased their numbers for accounting majors, their experience as an accounting major is not always the same as their male counterpart.
How Gender Effects the Accounting Profession.
Women in the accounting profession face many obstacles. They have to deal with opposition from male coworkers and supervisors, overt sexual harassment, lack of promotion and less pay compared to men in the same profession. Women are also believed to approach their job differently than men.
Studies have shown that there may be a significant difference in ethical judgments between genders and that women may be more ethical than men may. Therefore there exists a difference in women and men in ethical judgments in the workplace. Thus, even though they may be faced with the same set of occupational demands and rewards, they may respond differently (Smith 2000).
Women's experiences as accountants differ from those of men also in the interaction with clients and client's view of their accountant, based on their gender. Male clients appear to view interaction with female accountants as a power struggle. Women in general act similar in their behavior when it comes to interacting with clients, yet they are treated differently than male accountants (Radtke 2000). .
Though many women face obstacles and challenges in the accounting profession due to their gender, women accountants still maintain a high level of job satisfaction.
