Everyone in the town must now pick who's side to be on; the rapists" or the murderer's One side understands Carl Lee because a lot of fathers would have done the same thing in his situation. On the other side, people want to see another black man put to death no matter what the circumstances may be.
             Jake Brigance becomes Carl Lee's lawyer in the case that would echo throughout the state and even the nation. Jake knows that this will be his biggest case ever, but he quickly realizes that trying a black man of murdering two white men in front of a Predominantly white jury would be impossible. Many organizations get involved on both sides. The Ku Klux Klan and the NAACP have many marches through the streets of Clanton while the trial was going on. .
             The District Attorney ,Rufus Buckley, sees the trail as a road to Mississippi's governship. The Case quickly draws national news coverage, and Jake doesn't realize it yet but he is in way over his head. Jake has the help of his good friend ,divorce lawyer, Harry Rex, and the help of his old mentor, Lucien. He also has the help of a young ALCU member who is a law Student at Ole Miss named Ellen Roark. .
             During the trail, A lot of violence has happened with the KKK. Jake decides after a bomb threat to send his wife and daughter to Gulfport to be safe. The KKK were gathered up by Cobb's brother. They marched in protest and attacked the black protestors. Ozzie, the black sheriff, gets beat pretty bad. The leader of the KKK gets caught on fire and dies. With all hell breaking loose, Jake is having trouble not only with the trial, but with his friends and especially his wife. Encouragement from his old mentor Lucien gives Jake the confidence needed to finish the trial strong and to work things out with his family and friends.
             .
             After a long trial, it's not looking good for Carl Lee, especially when the defenses" psychiatrist is discredited on the stand when he is forced to admit he is a convicted felon.
