Change Analysis

Nelida is faulting on the first step of the 8 step model. She needs to try showing the villagers the difference that is made in the occurrence of illness in the village after the implementation of a sanitary water system. Educating the village people of the danger that the germs can present to them and their family is one way of increasing the sense of urgency. .
             Create the guiding coalition: Another way that would help Nelida to implement the new sanitary water beliefs is to create a group of people that are noticed in the community as leaders and focus her concentrations of change on them. At the time, Nelida is trying to change the habits of the whole community at one time. This method makes it difficult to spend a lot of time working with individuals. If she would spend more time with a "town gossip" or person of high status that represents the majority of the village, that person changing their habits would be another source of intervention.
             Develop a vision/ communicate the change vision: Nelida needs to portray the vision that she has in mind for the village to the villagers in a way that they understand. Right now they know what she wants from them, but they do not understand the how or why of the process. She then needs to get her group of community leaders to continuously voice the vision to other members of the village. .
             Empower broad-based action: The villagers have a very strong belief system in which the hot water that Nelida is trying to get them to use is supposed to be used only by the sickly. This is an obstacle that needs to be overcome, or the intervention needs to be changed. Implementing ideas of good health and a reduce in the population of the sickly is a way to change the populations reaction to the hot water.
             Generate short-term wins: Nelida has been able to change the opinions of some of the villagers. These converts are considered short-term wins on her behalf, and in some of the cases (meaning those not changing the habits of the sickly, or "outsiders" such as Mrs.
