The Laramie Project

The articles I read about Matthew Shepard, by James Brooke were horrifying. To think that human beings could do such an awful and hurtful thing to a fellow person just because they are different is scary. Occurrences like these happen everyday to all sorts of people.
Matthew was hated against just because he was open about his sexual preference. He was tied to a tree, beaten, and was left in the freezing weather, begging for his life. Knowing that this just happened four years ago is a frightening thought. After so many years of learning how to be equal with other races and religions it's an awful thought that we still see people as different and it still scares us.
I have never witnessed or been a part a hate crime that was so extreme. I've seen people make fun of others for being gay. Talking behind their backs and sometimes even to their faces. People use the words "faggot" and "gay" to hurt others and make them feel like they are outcasts. Those words don't even mean what we think they do. A "faggot" is a pile of sticks, and to be "gay" means you"re happy. Why can't we just let people be happy and who they are instead of treating them like we don't want them in this world.
America is supposed to be the land of the free no matter what race, religion, or gender you are. Why is being gay any different then being straight, why does it scare people so much? It's not a disease that will infect the population; it's just an alternative way of living. I"ll never understand why people are so scared of who another person prefers to love.
