The Morality Of Creation

Since the beginning of time human beings has been blessed with a conscience. Moral are the building blocks of our conscience, a set of principles that help us decide what is right and wrong, what is good and what is bad. In FRANKENSTEIN, written by Mary Shelley. Shelley explores morality and the creation of mankind. Shelley attempts to open the view of morality by having the character Victor Frankenstein open a whole new meaning of being human. Through the attempt of creating a new species, Frankenstein comes up with a human like creator he calls the Monster. Frankenstein had thought he was doing a service by creating a species of humans. Frankenstein says, "A new species would bless me as its creator and source; many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to me."(Shelley p58) Frankenstein soon figures out that his morals might get in the way of his own happiness.
The creation of the Monster has given Frankenstein himself a second thought at whether of not it was morally right to create this monster. He says, "Every night I was oppressed by a slow fever and I became nervous to a most painful degree; the fall of a leaf startled me, and I shunned my fellow-creatures as if I had been guilty of a crime."(Shelley p60) As we all know there is no universal morality guiding us through life nor is there a set of moral principle that we all have to follow but to what extent are we going to test our own conscience? Frankenstein has tested his conscience to a whole new level, what he did have far pass his own moral judgment of right and wrong. .

The moral judgment we choose to make everyday can haunt us for the rest of our lives. If we choose to make immoral judgments, there is bound to be a consequence for what we choose to do. As you can see through Frankenstein's decision to create a human being, he too has suffered his own consequences. Four innocent lives perish through the hands of his creation.
