I have found vines and grapes (10)." Such a source of food offered the Vikings a great advantage in that they could be easily be shipped and stored in their ships and would not spoil as fast as other food sources such as fish.
             Another invaluable resource Vineland had that kept the Vikings from moving on was trees, and lots of them. The Vikings were able to build themselves shelter using the wood. "They cast anchor and carried their hammocks ashore from the ship, and built themselves booths there. They afterward determined to establish themselves there for the winter, and they accordingly built a large house (9)." Another thing that the Vikings were able to build from the wood was more ships. "A cargo sufficient for the ship was cut, when the spring came they made their ship ready, and sailed away (11).".
             Another aspect of Vineland that the Vikings appreciated was the relatively mild seasons. "There was no frost there in the winters, and the grass withered but little. The days and nights there were of more nearly equal length than in Greenland or Iceland (10)." This made it much easier for the Vikings to keep cattle through the winter which would allow them more milk and beef. The longer days also meant that they had more time to do .
             their work. This allowed them to collect more food and discover more of the land. The Vikings also didn't need to concern themselves with winterizing their shelters or making lot's of warm clothes. This would allow them to concentrate on other important things needed for survival.

             Although everything seemed to be going very well for the Vikings, eventually they would run into resistance in the form of native people of the land. The first band of natives the Vikings met, surprised the Vikings and without thinking the Vikings killed 8 of the 9 men (one was able to get away). Later that night, a large band of natives moved in for an attack of the Viking ships.
