The "Diseducation Of The Negro"


Why isn't there a proportionate amount of black males in these scientific fields? In the researchers opinion, this phenomenon is occurring because black males are being, "diseducated." That is, they are being systematically separated from their education and as a result they are just not qualified to obtain such a position.
             The Problem.
             Why is there a low representation of black males in careers relating to science? In the researcher's opinion, black American males, are more likely than white American males or females to encounter certain events that often hinder their desire or ability to want to succeed in a scientific field, or any professional field for that matter. Based on the research, the hypothesis for the topic question is that the absence of blacks in careers relating to science can be directly accredited to the three most influential aspects of a black man's life; adolescent experiences, pre-college schooling, and higher education. .
             Adolescent Experiences.
             The increase in the number of single female-headed families has important implications for the living arrangements of black children (persons under the age of 18). Data for 1995 indicated that only 33.1% of black children lived with both their parents, compared to 75.9% of white children and 66.3% of Hispanic children (U.S. Census Bureau 1996). Of children living with only one parent, the majority live with their mother; 52.0% of black children and 17.8% of white children live with their mother (U.S. Census Bureau 1996). The existence of single-father families is very low; only 3.4% of white children, and 4.0% of black children reside with solely their fathers (U.S. Census Bureau 1996). It has been projected by the U.S. Census Bureau that 9 out of 10 black children are likely to spend some time during their childhood in single parent households.
             Analysis of census data from 1940 to 1992 indicates that black children are more likely to live in a home of a grandparent(s) than are white or hispanic children (U.
