Their Eyes Were Watching God

" Ironically, Logan tries to force Janie into the servitude that Nanny feared. He is disappointed that Janie does not return his affection and attraction. Logan knows he could not possess her through love, so he tries by demanding her submission. Deep down Logan feels Janie is going to leave him. Just a few months into the marriage, Janie visits Nanny to ask, "when is she going to love him". "Maybe if somebody was to tell me how, Ah could do it" (Hurston 23). Nanny berates Janie for being unappreciative of Logan's wealth. "Heah you is wid de onliest organ in town, amongst colored folks, in yo" parlor. Got a house bough and paid for and sixty acres uh land right on de big road - (Hurston 23). Although Logan pampers Janie for a year, he begins to complain that she is spoiled. He comments, "Mah fust wife never bothered me "bout choppin" no wood nohow. She"d grab dat ax and sling chips lak uh man. You done been spoilt rotten" (Hurston 26). Janie knows she wants more from a marriage than just wealth. She then voices Logan's deepest fears that she is contemplating leaving him. "S"posin" Ah wuz to run off and leave you sometime." (Hurston 30). Logan reminds Janie of her family's reputation, hoping to hurt her feelings as she did his. "Ah"m too honest and hard-workin" for anybody in yo" family, dat's de reason you don't want me!" (Hurston 32). Nevertheless, Janie is not afraid to follow her instincts, even when this means leaving her husband to marry her second without a divorce. Janie blows into a frenzy and she leaves with a smooth-talking gentleman, Jody Starks, the very next day. "Janie hurried out of the front gate and turned south. Even if Jody was not there waiting for her, the change was bound to do her good" (Hurston 32).
Janie chooses to leave Logan for Jody Starks because he revives her dreams of love in a marriage. Her first marriage teaches her that you do not marry for material possessions and wealth.
