James Thurber Comparison to his characters


He became blind in one eye. His injury turned into a case of sympathetic ophthalmia, thankfully, the disease miraculously arrested itself until the nineteen thirties or forties. Because of his injury, he was unable to participate in any physical games or athletic activities, which isolated him from his peers. As a result of him being ostracized from his classmates, he was known to be the teachers" pet in school. In Thurber's" later life, he has expressed an antipathy toward teachers" pets. When Thurber reached high- school he overcame his prior unpopularity and became president of his class. After graduation Thurber went on to attend Ohio State University. His first year was an unsatisfactory one, he could not pass the obligatory military drill and angered his captain with his ineptness. Without consenting his parents, he dropped out of college at the end of that year. When he reinstated himself after his single year without schooling, he met a friend on campus who read a piece of his writing and was very impressed by it. With his help, Thurber became the editor of the campus newspaper and Ohio State's humor and literature magazine, "The Sundial." Thurber left college without a degree to become a code clerk for the U.S. Embassy in Paris. When he returned to Columbus he began to write a weekly column entitled "Credos and Curios" for the Columbus Dispatch. In nineteen twenty- seven Thurber met E.B. White at a party in Greenwich Village, White worked for The New Yorker and felt that Thurber would make a good addition to the staff. He wrote for The New Yorker until 1933 but regularly contributed to the magazine until his death.(Lesniak, 422-23) .
