The Locus Of Laughter

Science is currently looking at laughter and it's over activity in children. Examples of this over activity are clearly seen in ADHD patients where children have a hard time calming down or controlling their laughter. (Psychological Science, 185) Some may even suggest that ADHD children are at no risk or danger to themselves as they more likely see the world in a better, happier frame of reference.
The future is bright for research of laughter and related topics. Our interest in laughter and our desire to learn more about it is spurring new and original research ideas, which allow us a better understanding of where and why. Along with better understanding, we can also find aids in extreme happiness or manic situations as well as severe depression. The main areas of study in laughter research include laughter and play, psychopathology and laughter, and laughter's effect in developing personality. (Psychological Science 186) Again, this research may help those who have a hard time finding a better, more positive frame of mind.
Having a happier frame of reference is something that some of us could truly use at a time of need or desperation. But what if we could activate laughter and create a better outlook for someone? A young girl underwent testing to discover the origin of her seizures and when the doctors activated her right frontal area, the young girl laughed.
Doctors in this research study applied electrical impulse to eighty-five different areas on the sixteen-year-old girl's brain. When they reached a two cubic centimeter area on the left superior front gyrus (or the anterior human supplementary motor area, the SMA), the girl, A.K., repeatedly exhibited laughter. When asked why she was laughing, the young girl replied that it was an object in the room or a person in the room that had done something funny. Yet the extent of her laughter was directly proportionate to the amount of electrical impulse applied to this area.
