The Locus Of Laughter

(Electric Current).
During A.K.'s stimulation of her anterior SMA, it was also discovered that she not only laughed, but she also smiled and displayed other laughter behaviors. These behaviors lead researchers to believe that not only did the anterior SMA play a role the actual act of laughter; it was also tied to the actions associated with laughter, such as motor functions, cognitive activities, and affective components. (Electric Current).
Obviously, the information attained through A.K.'s experience had a great impact on the area of biopsychology and specifically laughter research. While it gave us a possible point of reference for the origins of laughter, it also allowed for a deeper understanding of why and how we laugh. Numerous observations and assumptions can be made because of the location of the SMA that we will discuss later. Again, impacting society, with an area to focus on, we can determine and study better treatments for mental and brain ailments. With the implied activity of this area, researchers can study its participation in motor function, cognitive abilities, and emotional effects.
To determine more on the participation of the SMA, researchers P. Shammi and D.T. Stuss completed an experiment at the University of Toronto in 1999, which examined lesioned areas of the brain and their effect on a person's sense of humor, if any. This study, including all hypotheses and analysis, is extremely relevant to our research into the locus of laughter. Just as researchers have done for centuries with animals and rats, we are able to research lesion studies with pre-existing human conditions. These lesion studies provide us with a person lacking an area of the brain that we can research and determine the effects of the absence of that area of the brain, then infer the functioning based on the person's pathology. That person's pathology can then help us determine treatments or therapies for those suffering from similar problems.
