DELL

Michael Dell is an innovative businessman who has come up with a successful formula for business. In the highly competitive computer industry where everyone is trying to outsell one another, he has been able to apply the following simple, yet hugely successful method of selling his computers to the public. Dell's direct sales business model is such that the middleman is bypassed and deals directly with the customer through the internet or by phone. He builds computers on demand and only manufactures after an order is placed. Once the order is placed, it is built within hours, uniquely to each customer's specification, and shipped - often within a day or so of order. One of their catchy slogans is "What are you going to be doing with your computer?" Having gotten that information from the customer the computer is tailor made for them. Another important aspect of his success in selling his computers is that he makes it affordable to the consumer by providing affordable payment plans (after he has done a credit check). As a result, consumers who need a computer but cannot afford to shell out $1000 - $1500 immediately take advantage of plans ranging from $22 - $50 a month payment plan instead.
In order for a business to become successful and remain at the top for any length of time it is imperative that they have positive values that guide the way they do business. Dell refers to these values as their "core values". They are clearly defined and written. They are: direct relationships, respect of all relationships, performance, quality, and integrity. Dell expects his employees to "learn on the fly" and be responsible for their own learning. At Dell people are allowed to make mistakes as long as they learn from them and use this knowledge to give the company an advantage. Any training that is done must create strong links to the business. The way that Dell goes about conducting business coupled with his exceptional management of operating costs, gives rise to superior customer value and industry-leading growth and financial performance.
