Van Gogh

As a project, my senior year of high school, we were asked to write a fifteen page report on a historical figure. I choose to write it on Van Gogh, emphasizing on Starry Night. The more I got into Van Gogh’s work the more I became fascinated with the man behind the paintings. Van Gogh was a tormented soul and through the years you can see that his paintings project this. When you look at his earlier paintings you see that he used lighter colors such as yellows, whites, and oranges. He also painted from visuals that he projected from real life scenes such as self portraits, landscapes, and still life’s. Van Gogh was faced with many challenges in his life from hatred by his own brother, to whom he strongly looked up to, to having to deal with his own sexuality. By my opinion, I felt that he was way beyond his time but during the impressionistic period these mental torments lead to the distinction that Van Gogh was legally insane. If you were to go through all of his works from beginning to end you will see the happiness and heartache. As quoted by Don Mclean from his song “Vincent”, “But I could have told you, Vincent, This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.

The lines in the painting are not as distinct as if it were to be drawn from real life. As you will see the theme for the painting seems to be swirls and waves but if you look down onto the town in the lower right hand corner you will see that the lines are very direct and strait. I think that Van Gogh was trying to give a sense of “dream land” to the sky and a sense of “reality” to the town. I think that another proof of this theory is the fact that the town seems to be offset from where Van Gogh wanted us to be standing. Almost as if the night sky is a way to get away from the troubles of world.
