Decision Making Model
Making decisions is a major portion of the manager's responsibilities. It is not an aspect that cannot be taken lightly nor can it be done in a hasty manner. Hasty, careless decisions can have devastating results on the manager's department or even for the entire company. Decisions that are made with deliberation using different kinds of processes, however, can lead the department or company to better and/or more profitable operations. When decisions are indeed made in this manner, the manager should feel confident that he or she has made an appropriate decision and is the best option given the information available at the time. This does not mean to say that the manager will always make the correct decision; lack of information or situational changes can lead to faulty analysis. However, if the manager uses critical thinking and proven successful decision-making strategies, he or she can and should be confident in whatever action they have decided is appropriate. Their own confidence level will, in fact, affect the outcome of their action. We just recently had a situation in which a letter was mailed from a patient who was never seen before in our office to one of our senior and world-renowned joint specialist stating that he was unhappy and completely displeased with our office’s phone manner. He stated that between the hours of 9:00 am and 2:00 pm about two weeks ago, he was unable to reach a scheduler and even a live person. He proceeded to go on about him having to leave a message and that it was not returned until the very next day. In his mind this was poor patient care. To apply this very process to my occupation with the Tucson Orthopaedic Institute, is very simple due to the fact that I experience this decision making process on a daily basis. As a Patient Coordinator for our doctors, I find it necessary to make the best decisions possible. These decisions include forwarding our new patients over to be scheduled with the correct physician, ensuring the best patient care, and allowing myself to be accessible to other referring physicians, insurance providers, and, mainly, our patients. The physicians in this group are specialists and some of the very best in each of their individual fields, so when one simple mistake is made, a quick fix is definitely always in need.
