The crew is hand picked by the captain, the leadership ranks are of those who wish to seek political assylum in the United States--though this is not disclosed until near the end of the book. The remainder of the crew are young and inexperienced and also include one Soviet Party member whose job it is to see that all orders are carried out to exactness or to kill those seeking to do otherwise or to destroy the submarine itself. The Red October is picked up by a very wise US killer attack class small and fast submarine and the cavitations in the water are soon identified as the signature or fingerprint of the Red October when it is using the new water jet propulsion system. The submarine runs virtually silent down a system of deep water canals in the Atlantic on a course directly for the coast of the United States. As Jack Ryan, the key role played in the book, starts to analyze all of the data, he is given to thinking that the submarine is on a course to defect and not to start a neuclear war with the United States. The USSR soon relizes the same thing and an all out search by their navy to destroy the Red October causes the United States to take their actions as a threat to national security. Consequently, the US starts its own search. Jack Ryan is placed inside of the US hunt sub, causing some frustration for its captain as they were in pursuit of the Red October at the time they were told to surface.
