Odessey (book I-IV) summary + characters


            The odyssey is the continuation of the Iliad in which the Trojan war took place. It was a war between Greece and the people of troy. Beginning when Paris, the son of king Priam of Troy, stole Helen the wife of king Menelaus. Many brave warriors from different kingdoms in Greece went to war to win Helen back, one of them was Odysseus staying 10 years in war to win Helen back. When the war was over and they had won Helen back, many of those brave warriors died and never went back home, Yet Odysseus didn't die but stayed there longer .
             SECTION 1.
             - Starts off with the narrator bragging about Odysseus, the main character of the Odyssey "the man skill in all ways".
             - Odysseus is in the island of Ogygia, trapped by the goddess Calypso who is in love with him and doesn't let him go home. ***This all takes place because Poseidon is mad with Odysseus b/c he killed this son the Cyclops****.
             - Mean while in Ithaca, many suitors are trying to marry Penelope and take over this estate, thinking he is dead.
             - Athena goes to Zeus to ask if she could liberate Odysseus from Kalypso's island. Zeus refuses to give her this consent because Poseidon has the right to be mad, after all Odysseus did kill Poseidon's son.
             - So Athena disguises herself as Odysseus's old friend Mentes and goes to Telemachus, Odysseus's son who was a young boy when Odysseus left and now a young man. Athena tells Telemachus that she thinks his father is still alive. .
             - She tells Telemachus to call together all suitors and advise of their banishment from the estate due to the prediction of Mentes that Odysseus is still alive, she also tells Telemachus he must make a journey to Pylos and Sparta to look for his father. .
             - Telemachus gives notice to the suitors that he will hold an assembly the next day and order them to leave Odysseus estate. .
             - 2 suitors pick a personal fight with Telemachus asking him who gave him that absurd idea that his father is still alive.
