Fashion of the 1950s

The start of the 1950s was full of prosperity and conservation. It was the time after WW2 had end and many women sought opportunities to buy famous designer clothing. This was the time of conservationism and it showed through women’s clothing. The fifties definably showed the gender roles of the time period. Girls would plays with dolls and boys with guns. Also in these times women sought to have the perfect figure 8 to allure men. Even though sexy clothing was not allowed a women could wear something that accentuated her hips and bust line. The 50s was also a time to Think Pink! Everything was pink, from the shoes to the shirts to the dresses to the ties and even men started wearing pink shirts underneath their suits. Many things started to change including hair, makeup, clothing, fads, and slang. This was definitely a time to be different.

Women dressed conservatively or as the say “smartly” in the Fifties. Every inch of a woman must be a lady from her talk to her walk and to her style. From the time of birth a girl was taught to be a lady. (But this generation called the baby-boomers would soon rebel against conservationist ways in their teens.) Underneath a girdle was placed for one because it was necessary to acquire the perfect 8 by squeezing the stomach in and pushing the bust up and the hips out. Having a thin waistline was a major part of the style. Swing skirts and pencil dresses were often worn to shop or go out to eat, but rarely to parties, these styles were more for casual occasions, but girls nor women would ever dress down in front of the public. If a woman wanted to wear something around the house they may put on a wrap dress or a simpler swing skirt. Women did not go around doing housework in dresses wore with pearls and heels like they portrayed on television.

Fads and Slang is another thing that characterized the 1950s. Slang, used by many of the teens, came in and out as it pleased. Many words, like the word “cool”, stayed for many ages to come. The older teens didn’t want to sound like the younger teens so therefore they made up many different slang words to feel “cooler”. Many fads included poodle mania! They had ceramic, plastic, pink, white, and black poodles! They could cook with a poodle, decorate with a poodle, store things in a poodle, and t
