Ozone

Americans invest a great deal of effort in monitoring and cultivating their physical, financial, and human capital. The environment and the ecosystem, on the other hand, are just beginning to receive attention. Over the last three decades, there has been a growing recognition that pollution poses a serious threat to human population and global ecosystems. One realization is that the ozone layer is weakening. In fact, estimates show that the ozone hole is as big as North America, 9 million square miles. The ozone is a shield that absorbs and protects the earth from ultra-violet rays. Ozone depletion allows an increase of damaging ultra-violet rays that enter the atmosphere. Scientists believe that extra UV-Rays can cause cancer, cataracts and damage to agriculture Ozone, however, does have some practical uses such as: purifying water, sterilizing air and bleaching certain types of food. I will discuss what the ozone is, the cause for the erosion, and possible solutions.

The ozone is a transparent blanket in the atmosphere that aids and protects the earth. An astronaut looking back at earth can see this thin shell containing our atmosphere. This thin shell is the ozone shield. Ozone was discovered not because people were concerned

Second, companies are allowed to average their units to meet the rate standard. This way a new machine can balance out an older, higher polluting machine.

It took forty years after CFC production to determine the negative effect CFCs have and to discover the process of how CFCs deplete the ozone layer.

Technology has been the foundation for discovery and for curbing the environmentally harmful waste and byproducts we emit. To make significant strides we need to continue strengthening international commitment to control pollution as a whole. The Montreal Protocol is an example where governments agreed to limit the use of harmful chemicals, to promote alternative refrigerants and to use non-CFC emitting equipment. The ozone problem is an excellent example of how other types of pollution should be handled on an international scale. International resolve coupled with personal commitment and knowledge will allow future generations to see a shrinking ozone hole.

It is currently accepted that CFCs result in ozone depletion. Critics have attacked and corrected some of the initial claims. Originally, it was published that UV-B is increasing at 35% per year. In reality, the critics showed that there was rapid ozone depletion over 10 years, but since 1985 the hole has stabilized subject to infrequent fluctuations.

The Montreal Protocol has been a success, but critics eagerly point to its failures. People don't want to sacrifice their financial well-being. As a result, smugglers have brought in CFC agents, especially Freon. Furthermore, a black-market has emerged in the United States and in Europe. It is estimated that 10,000 to 22,000 tons a year enters from India and China. This large emerging black-market is understandable. The EPA estimated that the ten-year cost to citizens for automobile air conditioning recharging would cost 24 to 49 billion dollars. As a result, CFC 12 is the second largest contraband brought into the United States, second only to narcotics.

Scientist used their new technology and recorded ozone level findings. Chlorofluorocarbons, (CFCs) were discovered in high concentrations over Ireland that originated in London. Testing in the North Atlantic unexpectedly showed CFC concentration. The detection of CFCs was not expected in the North Atlantic because the area was uncontaminated by urban pollution. England then funded a program for scientist to set up a new testing station in an area that was entirely unpolluted. Antarctica was the new testing position decided upon. Annual monitoring showed that ozone would decrease by 35% during the months between September and December.
