Research and Animal Testing

Throughout history, animal experimentation has played an important role in leading to new discoveries and human advantages. Just recently, Europe banned cosmetic and pharmaceutical with ingredients that were being tested on animals. "Europe's idea is to put more pressure on other parts of the world to end animal testing, but the science doesn't match the political timetable. "(Mackay, Colin Msnbc News) After the new rule was announced, the cosmetic company L'Oreal, which is based in France, said they would respect the ban and "no longer sell in Europe any finished product with an animal tested ingredient. " Many people tend to forget the great numbers of animals that have suffered serious damage during the process of experimentation and are unable to understand the actual laboratory procedures and techniques that go into testing cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Animal testing is an unnecessarily cruel and inaccurate process that should not be used to test cosmetic products and new drugs today. .
People may argue that using animals in scientific experiments has led to many discoveries that have improved our quality of life. However, the fact is that animal testing is often ineffective in predicting how products will work on people. Animals do not suffer from disease the same way humans do. Their bodies do not process chemicals in the same way our bodies do. For example, rats, the species most commonly used in vivisection, have no gall bladder and excrete bile very effectively. Journalist, Jackie Bartelmo states, "Ninety-two percent of drugs that passed animal testing failed clinical trials on people and every year more than 100,000 humans die from drugs that were successfully passed by animal testing. ".
Animals are tested on for vitamin deficiency, life support systems and surgical techniques (Animal Experimentation"). A chemical of choice is forced by tube into the animals' stomachs or through holes cut in their throats.
