People just wanted to get the ritual over with and get back to everything else, some hoping to gain revenge upon another. Relating closely in present day, hazing is a ritual performed in high schools and gangs. Even your best friend could be in on it. Running of bulls in foreign countries is also very comparable to the lottery. Many deaths are caused by bulls trampling through the streets, yet this tradition is not about to be abolished.

These antics relate to the antics mobs and riots today. These are examples of blind group rituals that happen in present times. These rituals are energized by inner hate and thoughts that are only brought out in the event of a group. Fall guys, leaders, and strength fuel these parties to commit the deeds that are only fulfilled by a group. All of these deeds relate closely to the tragic ritual in “The Lottery”. Shirley Jackson kind of sets up a transparent theme in this story. She shows us that human nature will always prevail. The throwing of the stones seems mandatory to every person in the town. It also seems like this would be looked at as a penalty in the event of a person who refuses to throw a stone. Also little kids in this story do not recognize this ritual as a crime or death. They see it as a game or an annual festival. These children do not have the mental capacity to foresee this murderous game as death. They lack deep dark thoughts.
