Debate Speech - School Uniforms

One reason school uniforms would not be a good idea for district 219 is that the uniforms would be a financial burden for poor families. The average cost for a generic school uniform is $249. The uniform is very pricey, and a family can get clothe at least two children for several weeks with that money. This means that the families that have less money would have a lot of trouble getting uniforms. For example, if a family has 3 kids, that would be about $747 just for the uniform. This doesn't include all the other school fees, which can add up as well. Also, school uniforms doesn't include weekend clothe and anything out of school, so the parents would have to buy more clothes than just the uniform, instead of just getting regular clothes. The cost of the uniform is a very important factor to take in when deciding if a school should have uniforms. If the school does decide to have uniforms, this could force the poorer families to move to a different district, losing students. Also, since the children are in a time of their life where they grew a lot, the parents will almost always have to get a new uniform every year. Like I said before, if there's 3 children in the family, that's $747 down the drain every year.
             Matt's Reasoning.
The last main reason school uniforms should not be required in District 219 is that it encourages conformity and reduces student's individuality. Many teens express themselves through their clothes and accessories. Taking away their individuality can lead to behavioral problems, which school uniforms try to make go away. Also, limiting free [removed]individuality, in this case) can be compared to limiting the freedom of speech. Which, again, can lead to behavioral problems. Another reason school uniforms would be bad is because it would encourage conformity. Conformity: Behavior in accordance with socially accepted conventions or standards. We don't want to the children of tomorrow to act like they have to fit in to have friends.
