War Photographer - James Nachtwey


            James Nachtwey grew up in Massachusetts and graduated from Dartmouth College, where he studied art history and political science. Images from the Vietnam War and the American civil rights movement had a powerful effect on him and were instrumental in his decision to become a photographer. James Nachtwey began photographing in the early 1980's and was a contract photographer for Time magazine from 1984 to 2001. He has made himself famous for his coverage of wars and various other social conflicts and issues. Since then, Nachtwey has devoted himself to documenting wars, conflicts, and critical social issues. His photographic projects are lengthy and all encompassing. He has worked all over the world in numerous continents, including Africa, most notably in Rwanda, which is where this picture is from.
             I discovered Nachtwey through one of my friends. They suggested I go see a documentary film about Nachtwey entitled War Photographer. The film was incredible and led me to research more about Nachtwey. He has made himself famous for his coverage of wars and various other social conflicts and issues. Since then, Nachtwey has devoted himself to documenting wars, conflicts, and critical social issues. His photographic projects are lengthy and all encompassing. He has worked all over the world in numerous continents, including Africa, most notably in Rwanda, which is where this picture is from. .
             The way Nachtwey photographed his subjects was by putting himself into their world so much so he was almost including himself in the photograph. The result of this style is evident in the fact that the viewer always feels as though they were there as well. You feel that if you were to reach out you could touch the subject. This makes the image much more powerful because it can then target your emotional response directly. In this photograph the subject is a Hutu man who did not support the genocide.
