Chickens are being raised on chicken farms for profit. They are raised for their eggs that they produce. The way they are treated are terrible and need to change. Chickens shouldn't have to be miserable when they are the ones making profit for farmers. They should at least be treated like one would treat their own family pet. Chickens shouldn't be tortured after all their hard work. They should be admired instead.
A mature chicken is called a hen and an immature chicken is called a pullet or chick. They have four or five toes and are known to have more bones in their neck than giraffes. They don't chew their food because they don't have teeth so they swallow their food whole, part of their stomach work to grind their food up. They are the closest relative to the t-rex. There are about 150 different types of chickens. They come in several different colors and patterns. They are classified as birds but can't maintain a flight; the record of a chicken in air was thirteen seconds. They can live for twenty years while still laying eggs, but the amount decreases after year one. All hens don't lay white or brown eggs, some can lay a pink, green, or even blue egg, and it all depends on their first egg that they lay. As stated, "There are more chickens than people in this world " (Embar).
Now that we know more about chickens, we can start talking about their treatment in the egg industry. The egg industry starts off with chicks at the hatchery. The chicks are spilt into two groups after they hatch, male and female. There is no use for the male chicks in the egg industry, so they are discarded, either by getting gassed, thrown in the dumpster or put in a plastic bag or grounded up alive. Sometimes the chick wouldn't die as easily, so they have to die in a slow agonizing way. This is the way egg industry gets rid of their male chicks.
The female chicks are not killed seeing that they are needed to lay eggs.
