The Odyssey and the quest


            In The Odyssey by Homer, the valiant Odysseus sets off for Ithaka from Troy as an uncivilized, arrogant, and uncontrollable brute. Brutalized by many years at war, Odysseus is unable to practice the many virtues he once had. Under Odysseus" poor leadership, him and his men are caught in situations that result in ships crushed and many lives lost,. However, from these tragic experiences, Odysseus undergoes a mental transformation. Odysseus comes out a true leader, realizing the value of humility, compassion, and willpower, among other virtues.
             Proud and pretentious Odysseus changes into a humble man after his bragging leads to great tragedies. At Kyklopes Land, when Odysseus and his men are successfully escaping from the Kyklops, Odysseus is too arrogant to leave anonymous. His men plead with him to just leave triumphantly without another word, but Odysseus would not have it. .
             "[He] would not heed them in [his] glorying spirit,.
             but let [his ] anger flare and yelled:.
             "Kyklops,.
             if ever mortal man inquire.
             how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him.
             Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye:.
             Laertes" son, whose home's on Ithaka!" (p.160).*.

             Kyklops, informed of exactly who to take advantage on, is angered once more when Odysseus cries out to him, "If I could take your life I would and take/ your time away, and hurl you down to hell!" (p.161).* This creates immense problems for Odysseus and his men because Kyklops, furious and wounded, prays for Poseidon to make sure that Odysseus lose his companions and reach home only after bitter trials and tribulations. Odysseus and his crew are cursed because Odysseus was not remain modest while in the presence of the terrible Kyklops. As the journey wages on, more men die and ships are crushed by the Laistrygonians. After his crew is dwindled down to just the men on his ship, Odysseus begins to realize that he needs to change his ways in order to preserve the lives of the remaining men and himself.
