The Dive From Clausens Pier

“When something terrible happens to someone else, people often use the word ‘unbearable.’ Living through a child’s death, a spouse’s, enduring some other kink of permanent loss--it’s unbearable, it’s too awful to be borne, and the person or people to whom it’s happened take on a kind of horrible glow in your mind, because they are in fact bearing it, or trying to: doing the thing that it’s impossible to do (Packer 1).” This is an exert from chapter one of the book. As you can see, when the unthinkable happens, it is extremely tough for everyone involved. When a person looses the feeling in their legs and becomes a quadriplegic, it is thought to be an unbearable situation. Although the situation may seem unbearable, it is not. Handling a situation such as the paralysis of a loved one draws on ones character, and ultimately tells what kind of person you are.

There are many different ways to deal with such a crisis. No matter what you choose to do, your decision shows who you are. This does not make you a bad or a good person, it simply shows your character. The issue of character comes up in two books; Character is Destiny by Russell Gough, and The Dive From Clause

In Character is Destiny the quote by Aristotle I think better describes character. I think that you are what you repeatedly do. If you repeatedly do good things, and the good things outweigh the bad, you are a good person. There are always exceptions, like committing murder. It is hard to determine what acts and decisions could make you a bad person. There is not a list of very bad acts carved in stone that tell if you are a bad person or not. I think that is decided upon by your community, and their perception of you.

I personally think that she made the right decision. The right decision was ultimately made a little later than it should have been, but it was made. She finally found out that she loved Mike, and she owes him everything. She is transformed from an egotistical girl into a caring woman by her decision to come back and try and take care of the man she once was engaged to.

“How much do we owe the people we love,” is asked by Carrie, when she talks about leaving Mike. She eventually said, “I couldn’t give up my life for Mike (Packer 147).” Her decision tells me that she is not a mentally tough person. She can not cope with the idea that she will have to be loyal to Mike, and take care of him everyday. Her character shows in this moment, and it shows to be very weak and undeveloped.

When you truly love someone, you would give anything for them. I do not think that you should ever owe anything to someone you love. Out of love to your partner you would do anything that is needed to help them out. In The Dive From Clausen’s Pier Carrie thinks that she owes it to Mike to take care of him, and stay with him. I do not think she actually loved him in the first place. If she actually loved him she would not even think about leaving him when times got hard. She also would not think twice to do whatev
