With and without media paper
Growing up in a home where we had no television channels or cable and very few selected videos and DVD’s, I was exposed to very little mass media. Also, being home-schooled up until high school exposed me to even less mass media because I was not in a public school around kids who were around lots of mass media in their own homes. The only time I heard about news was from my parents and what they would tell me was going on in the world after they would read the newspaper. I lived a pretty sheltered childhood and was not exposed to much at all until I entered high school. Even in high- school, however, I continued to not be exposed to much mass media, simply because I was too busy with my studies and playing tennis on the school’s team and did not have time for much else. After having been exposed to more and more mass media as I have grown older, I am thankful to my parents for sheltering me from it and allowing me keep my innocence for as long as they could. I understand now, after viewing some of today’s TV shows, my parent’s reasons for not having television in our home and I believe it was a good decision on their part. Although growing up I was often unable to join in conver
This assignment made me see how consumed with mass media our culture really is. One has to make a conscious effort if they want to avoid it, and even then, it is difficult to not have some form of mass media in our lives. I found that my time seemed much better spent when it was not “media filled” because I was focused on and appreciated things of more importance and value instead of being consumed with things having to do with mass media. I was surprised to discover that I have more media habits than I thought I did. Because I have not been exposed to much media throughout my entire life, it was not that hard for me to avoid media, but I am exposed to it more than I thought. I would say that my life does not revolve around the media, but the media is definitely a part of my daily living, probably more than it should be. I actually really enjoyed the day where I tried to avoid the media as much as I could. The day just seemed calmer and more peaceful and not as loud and hectic. It was a nice change that I will try more often. I think it is good to take a break from the media every once in awhile because it is so easy to let it gradually take over so much of our lives. It is my belief that people who do this assignment would find, as I did, that the media consumes our lives way more than we think and it is harder to avoid mass media than we would expect. I think it is important to be aware of the mass media in our lives, as it plays such a major role in our society today, and to be discerning of how much of it we let into our lives, because I do believe that mass media has a huge effect on us as individuals and as a society. Day Two, the day without mass media, ended up being harder for me than I had expected. I was constantly having to make an effort to not expose
