Hooters

It all began one day in the pleasant town of Clearwater, Florida. While sitting around at a table playing Parcheesi, six men got the sudden urge for the smell of freshly sawed lumber and the taste of some Buffalo style chicken wings. These men did not have the access of driving to Buffalo to satisfy their urge so they decided to bring Buffalo wings to Clearwater. The men scrounged up $140,000 and purchased a building on 2800 Gulf To Bay Boulevard, Clearwater. They now had to make a rather important decision, which ultimately led to the overall success of their franchise. They had to come up with a name. They thought about the simple things in life that bring a gleam to a man's eye besides beer and chicken wings and thus came the name "Hooters". Once they agreed on "Hooters" to become the title they adopted a hooter owl as their mascot. The intention of the owl was to lesson the flack received by women rights leaders. The gentlemen then decided their waitress would where tight white tang-tops and tight orange daisy duke shorts. Dressing in this attire also brought much controversy from women rights leaders, but was ruled in court that women have the right to chose their occupation, be it a Supreme Court Justice or a Hooters girl. .
In 1991 the Hooters franchise once again became under fire with legal issues. This time the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission brought forth a charge claiming that Hooters discriminates against the hiring of males. After an intense 4-year investigation the executives maintained their stance as that they only hire women as Hooters girls, but allow other positions in the business for men. This charge brought on by the EEOC led to a 100 Hooters girl march in Washington D.C., which gained positive support in the media. Over 500,000 Hooters customers supported the cause by sending letters to the congress. Later, 24 members of the 104th congress sent a letter to the EEOC requesting them to drop their charge and on May 1, 1996 they did.
